How Podcasters Are Using AI (And What Listeners Really Think About It)

These days, it feels like every second conversation is about the advancement, ethical dilemmas, and potential uses of AI. But does AI have a role in podcasts? If so, what is it? How can we use AI ethicall,y and how do listeners feel about it all?

Let’s dig in.

First, are podcasters really using AI?

Short answer: yes. But not everyone.

A recent survey of over 1,100 podcast creators found:

  • 25% are already using AI tools

  • 58% say they’re open to giving AI a go

  • 16% are steering clear, mostly due to concerns about authenticity

  • 25% are still sitting on the fence

So, while we’re not seeing an AI takeover (yet), the shift is definitely happening. Creators are experimenting with ways to streamline their workflow, from generating show notes and transcriptions to tidying up audio.

And honestly, when you’re juggling interviews, production, editing, socials, emails, life… Who wouldn’t want a few helpful tools behind the scenes?

But what do listeners think about it?

Turns out, most podcast fans are fine with a bit of AI in the mix, especially when it improves the listening experience.

  • 80% of listeners support using AI to improve sound quality

  • 72% are happy for AI tools to write transcriptions and show notes

  • And interestingly, 53% feel okay with AI-generated voices for fictional or “deepfake-style” content like fake celeb interviews

So, what’s the vibe? Basically, if AI is used to enhance production, listeners are into it. If it’s used to replace people or blur the line between fiction and reality? That’s where things get a bit icky.

Listeners still care about connection, clarity, and credibility, and smart podcasters are starting to use AI tools to make their workflow easier (and keep the quality high).

Interestingly, apparently these rules don't apply to celebrities.

What does this mean for you?

If you’re a podcaster or planning to launch a show soon, here’s the takeaway:

  • AI isn’t a replacement for your voice, style, or personality, but it can absolutely help behind the scenes

  • Listeners are on board when it makes your show sound better or easier to access. Basically, think about what’s in it for them.

  • And using AI doesn’t mean you lose authenticity: it means you’re working smarter, not harder
